Army Launches Web Site to
Assist in Determining if Army-related Personnel May Be Affected
by Recent Data Loss from VA
The Department of the Army has activated a secure web site
at https://ID-Theft.army.mil enabling current and former servicemembers
the capability to determine if their personal information
was potentially compromised as a result of the data loss from
the Department of Veteran's Affairs on May 3, 2006.
The data loss included identifying
information (name, SSN's and dates of birth) on as many as
20 million veterans, to include active and reserve servicemembers.
There is no evidence that the data has been used illegally,
but all Soldiers and former servicemembers should be extra
vigilant with regard to their financial well-being.
When entering the Army's secure
web site, ensure that you enter all the requested information
(name, last four of social security number, date of birth)
in the format specified to receive a valid response to your
query. If you have been identified as having had your personal
information compromised, you will be linked to the VA web
site, which explains recommended steps needed protect yourself.
For additional information on how to protect yourself, contact
DoD's Military One Source at www.militaryonesource.com
or 1-800-342-9647.
